about

1997
My very dear long-time friend, (Fabemi) John Turpin, passed away this February (2020). He is an American who went to study Ifa in Nigeria, Africa many years ago. Ifa is a system of divination and religion of the Yoruba people. He was ordained a priest of Ifa and I composed this piece in his honor.

He told me the story of his ordination where he was kept isolated in a hut while chanting was going on outside in preparation for the ceremony. During this time, he was listening to BBC Jazz on his short-wave transistor radio. The juxtaposition of these two elements bore a resemblance to his own character. He recorded the actual chants and I've included them here in the beginning of this piece.
